The answer to this question is going to change depending on which one you're buying. Generally, they will range from 200 square feet to at a maximum 800 or so square feet. What they mean is that it is capable of circulating the air contained in that amount of space several times per hour, to the point where it will be cleaned of most contaminants.
Unless you're getting one that is designed for commercial or industrial use, in practical terms this means that at best you will be able to cover one or two rooms with a single purifier. Whether this is adequate depends on what your needs are. For example, many people are getting one because of a localized problem - pet odors, smoking, etc. - where you can put it in a single place and have it be quite effective. People who just generally want cleaner air can do fine with one if they move it around the house every few days, or even once a week - realistically, that will be enough to clear out most dust you're generating. Others will find that they spend most of their time in one or two rooms of the house, and that they'll want it there.
If you're getting them because you're especially sensitive to something - allergies, pollen, etc. - and you think you will need complete coverage of the entire house, then you might need to buy more than one. If you do that, think about getting a cheaper brand for any room you don't spend as much time in.
