Hunter is an old company that got into air purifiers in a roundabout way - it's actually a fan-making company that started out in 1886. They've got a lot of different products now, but one big part of their business is air cleaners. They have a lot of different models, so you're able to pick based on room size and what features you want, but the two big systems they have are called QuietFlo and HEPATech.

QuietFlo is a system that combines a carbon pre-filter with a HEPA filter. Carbon filters are designed to remove odors and gases from the air, and the pre-filter also captures pet hair and lint. Pre-filter systems are designed to be cheaper to replace than the more expensive HEPA filters, so they take a crack at the air first to get as much junk out as possible the cheap way.

HEPATech uses a washable pre-filter (so you don't need to replace it), an ionizer (which charges particles so that they stick to the filters easily), and a HEPA filter.

In terms of which one to pick, it depends on why you're getting it. If you're worried about either smells or tobacco smoke, go with QuietFlo. If you're worried about dirt in the air, or cost of replacing filters, HEPATech is a better bet.

Here are a couple of the more popular models:

Hunter Quietflo HEPA Small-Tower with Ionizer

This one is made for medium sized rooms (up to 11 feet by 13 feet). It combines the QuietFlo technology with an ionizer. It gets a lot of good reviews from people trying to get rid of smells in particular - it can be a little noisy on the higher settings, but is pretty quiet on low. It will run you about $100.

Hunter HEPAtech Large-Tower with Ionizer

This is a larger version that uses HEPATech. It can cover a little more area - rooms up to 12 1/2 by 12 1/2 feet. In that space, it will cycle the air through the purifier about six times an hour, so you've got regular removal of junk from the air. It costs around $140.

They've got a lot of other models - these two are the generic, mid-range for either technology, so if you're looking for something different you can get more Hunter air purifiers here.
