Do air cleaners really pick up any dirt?

Here's a question from a reader:

"My husband wants to get a purifier for our townhome because it keeps getting dirty all the time. We have to dust three or four times a week. Do air purifiers really pick up much dust out of the air?"

In my experience, yes, they will remove a surprising amount of dirt from the air that you would otherwise be breathing in. I've used them in a house that doesn't have anywhere near the dust problems you're describing (a couple of times a month is all I had to dust) and here was what happened when I started using an Ionic Breeze:

Above is the filter just before cleaning. It's hard to see, but it's covered in filth.

Here's what came off when I ran a paper towel across it. All of that is stuff that I would have been breathing in otherwise - and this was from a fairly small area. It's easy to see how people could get irritating allergy problems. Running an air cleaner will take a lot of dust out of the air, and you'll be able to see it on the filter. The effectiveness varies by brand, but I would not hesitate to use even a cheap one if you've got any kind of issues with air quality.
