Do air cleaners make a lot of noise?

Here's a question from a reader:

"I have allergy problems and I would like to get an air purifier to try to cut down on some of the pollen this spring. The problem is I'm also a light sleeper, will I be able to use it in the bedroom or will I be awake all the time?"

If you are concerned about the noise, then you need to be careful. It's hard to give you a 100% certain answer because it varies by brand and even by the specific model you're buying. The best tip I can give you is to try to find one that is not completely cheap ($50 or so is the low end, if you want to be safe go for the $100 range) and make sure that it has multiple settings for low, medium, and high. The cheaper brands tend to be louder because they don't put as much effort into giving them "extras." You want the different settings because most of the time, the "low" version is extremely quiet and not something that would disturb you. I don't know how loud is enough to wake you up, but I've used several brands and on low you can't hear them at all. On the other hand, I've had one (not being made anymore) that sounded like an air conditioner on full blast.

Another thing you should do is run an internet search for the specific model number you're thinking about buying. You will usually come up with some people reviewing it or complaining about it, and one of the first things they'll talk about is whether it's quiet or loud.
