Will an air cleaner get rid of cigarette smoke?

Here's a question from a reader:

"My husband smokes and I don't. I hate the smell but he can't always go outside because it rains alot. will an air cleaner get rid of the smell and keep the stench off all of our stuff?"

That depends on the brand, but as a general matter yes, air purifiers are pretty effective at getting rid of the smell of tobacco smoke. Cigars, cigarettes, etc. will all have their odors sucked up. The main thing you need to know is that there is one type of filter that is very effective at dealing with the byproducts of smoking: the carbon or charcoal filter. That kind is specifically designed to deal with gases, and you'll want to make sure that whatever you buy has a carbon filter inside. There are other filters (ionizers, etc.) that don't do anything about gases, and it's important to make sure you buy a brand that has more than just those filters.

Another thing is that you might want to ask your husband to smoke near the purifier itself. Air cleaners can take some time to run all the air through the room - usually at least 15 minutes. If you're smoking in the same general area as the air purifier, it's much more likely to quickly get rid of the smell - and it will also keep you from being exposed as much to the risks of second-hand smoke.

As far as which ones to look at, one particular brand I would try is Rabbit Air Cleaners. They're one of the higher quality brands, a little expensive, but they actually make one designed specifically to deal with cigarette smoke and other toxins.
