Welcome to a guide to air cleaners - an internet site that is filled with details on various kinds of products designed to remove allergens and pollutants from the air, generally known as an "air cleaner" or an "air purifier." There are several different types, varying in size, in kind of filters, and in their intended use. You might need one if you have a long-lasting odor problem (from smoking, or pets, or mold), are bothered by allergies to some kind of airborne allergen, or just don't want to breathe in all of the junk that you'll find exists in the air around you. One look at the dirt, debris, and other stuff you find in your air filter will convince most people they should keep one running in their house at all times. This site will go through some of the basic brands, give you information on the different types of filtration systems used inside them, and suggest a few you might want to consider purchasing.

General Types of Air Purifiers:
HEPA Air Cleaner - This is a particular kind of air filter called HEPA, which basically means one that is designed to remove the vast majority of extremely small particles out of the air. They're very efficient, but they can be costly to replace (so you have to factor that into your calculations).
Ultraviolet Air Cleaners - This is a kind of filter used to kill germs with UV light rays. It doesn't actually take anything out of the air (but it's often combined with other filters that will do that so that it is a single machine).
Ionic Air Cleaners - This is another type of filter that works by charging particles of dust or other airborne allergens, and then running them past a metal plate which they will stick to. It's one that is usually most effective when you combine it with another kind of filter.
Carbon Air Filters - This kind of filter is designed to eliminate odors and gases (think cigarette smoke, but there are other things you might use it for).
Car Air Purifiers - These are little portable versions, which you usually plug into the car's cigarette lighter. Smokers in particular tend to like these, because they keep from getting that scent stuck in the car (which can make it worth a lot less on resale).
